Apple Boosts Talks OpenAI for iPhone
Apple is apparently stepping up talks with OpenAI For Iphone to help bring generative AI features, despite continuing talks with Google. The details were revealed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who revealed that discussions between Apple and OpenAI have recommenced on using the startup’s technology to power some of the new features that the iPhone will be introducing later this year.
Dialogues: Apple, OpenAI, Google
The two companies had a conversation earlier this year, but Gurman said that since then, things have quieted down. This happened when Google and Apple were still debating whether to license Gemini, their chatbot, to operate on the iPhone. While Apple was discovered certifying agreements with both OpenAI and Google, Gurman affirms that the conversation could result in nothing, as reported by iMore.
iOS 18: AI-Focused iPhone Updates
However, iOS 18 is expected to include a number of AI-focused features as major updates to the iPhone operating system. Furthermore, a number of stories have suggested that Apple will work with whichever firm it partners with to develop an interface akin to a chatbot.

Gurman claims that in addition to OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, Anthropic, the AI startup behind the Claude 3 chatbot, have also been partially involved in discussions. The current question is whether the iPhone 16 will introduce new generative AI capabilities that leverage the A18 chip as Apple starts to shift hardware to support AI operations being executed on-device.
